Weller #SL500 Soldering Iron
I finally broke down and bought one of these WELLER (Formerly UNGAR) irons for me to use in our shop because curiosity got the best of me. I used to use the 40 watt model commonly found in the hardware store at a much lower price. The brand name of this model was also Weller. So I wondered what could the difference be for such a huge price difference? Well I found out that it was in performance. You still have to take care of this one and keep the tip silvery and clean. You do this with frequent swipes at your wet sponge and lots of swipes with your small wire brush and tinning compound. My wire brush is a BOW braid brush which is perfect for this chore. Be good to this Weller Soldering Iron and you will find your money is well spent. With proper maintainence which means you do not let it idle for more that just a few minutes. Idling is allowing this iron to set at full heat without repeated cleaning with the wet sponge. If you take care of this iron and absolutely forbid it to become blackened it will keep its shape and put the solder right where you want it when you want it. The part is we alsp staock elements with and without the tip or just the tip itself. So if the iron should fail, it is possible to repair without havin g to buy another new one. I love mine and I use it, exclusively. all of the time.
This is a 50 watt 1000 degree soldering iron with a thread on chisel tip. (Replacement tips available in our store's inventory)
